Chapter Eleven

Nick waited impatiently for Sumeera to actually say that she was giving them another chance. He wanted them to be together, not because of the baby, but because he was miserable without her. He had no idea what their future held, but he was ready for the next step.

“Okay,” she finally said barely loud enough for him to hear.

He lifted her chin with the pad of his finger, needing to look into her eyes. “Are you sure? I’m in this for the long haul, Meera. I need to know that we are in this together.”

She nodded. “I’m sure.”

She didn’t sound confident, but Nick was prepared to do whatever necessary to prove to her that he was ready for whatever she wanted their relationship to be. He understood her need to protect herself. When they were dating, she had told him about her late husband. Considering how long it took for her to let Nick get close, he wondered if she were still in love with Aaron. But during their trip together, to Vegas, Sumeera professed her love to Nick. At the time, he hadn’t been ready to hear it, and totally blew the moment when he said “thank you” instead of saying what she wanted to hear.

Nick wrapped her in his arms and kissed her sweet lips, never wanting to let go. When they finally pulled a part, he said, “We have some celebrating to do, and I know just the place.”

Hours later, Nick pulled into the garage of his new home.

“Is this the first time you’ve been here since closing on the house?” Sumeera asked.

He turned off the truck and closed the overhead door. “No, I stopped by the afternoon of your doctor’s appointment when you were taking a nap. I had to let the cleaning people in and wait for the furniture for the man cave to be delivered.”

Sumeera laughed. “Of course you had to furnish the most important room in the house first. I’m amazed your cousins were able to finish renovating the lower level so fast.”

“There’s definitely an advantage to having a family full of construction workers.” Sumeera started to climb out of the truck. Nick stopped her with a hand on her arm. “Sit tight. I’ll help you down.”

He hurried around to the passenger side and reached for her hand. With the oversized tires on his truck, there was a big drop to the ground.

“Nick, I’m pregnant, not helpless. I could’ve climbed down myself.”

“Maybe, but I’m not taking any chances. This truck is taller than the other one.” He’d purchased the truck a couple of weeks after they broke up.

Sumeera tsked. “You don’t have to keep catering to me. I’m not helpless.”

“I know I need to back off some, but… I don’t know, babe. It’s just not that easy to do. I can’t help worrying about you and the baby. Give me a little time to get used to all of this.”

“Well, just know that I appreciate everything you’ve been doing for me.” She brushed her lips across his.
